Breast augmentation: not bigger, but better suited to you.
Breast augmentation is a cosmetic operation that adds volume and shape to the breasts using silicone implants or your own fat. In this guide we bring together everything about breast augmentation in Turkey: the methods, implant choice, the recovery timeline, the risks and how a breast augmentation trip is planned.
- Breast augmentation is performed with two main methods: silicone implants or fat transfer. For a noticeable increase in size, implants are the standard choice.
- Implant size alone does not decide how natural the result looks; chest width, skin quality and the placement plan matter just as much.
- Implants can be placed under the muscle, over the muscle or in a dual plane; the choice depends on tissue thickness.
- If the breasts sag, breast augmentation alone is not enough; it is usually planned together with a breast lift.
- Most patients return to desk work after about 1 week and to exercise after 4–6 weeks; the final shape settles in 3–6 months.
- Implants are not lifetime devices; regular check-ups and a plan for future replacement should be discussed.
What is breast augmentation?
Known medically as augmentation mammoplasty, breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgical procedure that increases breast volume, improves shape or balances a difference between the two breasts. The goal of breast augmentation surgery is not simply a bigger cup size but a result that fits your proportions and looks and feels natural. On our breast augmentation treatment page we summarised the scope of the procedure; this guide walks you through the decision step by step.
The reason for low volume differs from person to person: some women never developed the breast volume they wanted, while others lost fullness after pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight loss. Breast augmentation needs a different plan for each of these starting points.
- Adds volume to small or underdeveloped breasts
- Restores fullness lost after pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Balances a noticeable size difference between the breasts
- Improves the balance between upper and lower body
Who is breast augmentation suitable for?
Age is not the deciding factor for breast augmentation; general health, breast tissue characteristics and realistic expectations are. Cosmetic breast augmentation requires the breasts to be fully developed, so requests from patients under 18 are generally not accepted.
- Women who feel their breast volume is small for their body proportions
- Women whose breasts lost fullness after childbirth or weight loss
- Women with congenital asymmetry or tuberous breasts
- Healthy non-smokers, or smokers ready to quit
Surgery is postponed during pregnancy or breastfeeding, when a pregnancy is planned soon, when a breast lump has not yet been investigated or when weight is changing quickly. Depending on age and family history, a breast ultrasound or mammogram is requested before surgery.
Breast augmentation methods: implants or fat transfer?
Breast augmentation is done with two main methods. Which one is chosen depends on the volume you want, how much fat can be harvested and how much recovery time you can set aside.
| Method | Volume increase | Best suited to | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silicone implants | Noticeable, predictable | Anyone wanting one cup size or more | Long-term check-ups, replacement when needed |
| Fat transfer | Limited (usually half to one cup size) | Those who want a subtle increase and a natural feel | Part of the fat is absorbed; a second session may be needed |
| Hybrid (implant + fat) | Noticeable, with soft transitions | Thin-tissued patients whose implant edges might show | Longer operating time |
Fat transfer breast augmentation uses fat removed from areas such as the abdomen or hips with liposuction , which is then processed and injected into the breasts. Using your own tissue is appealing, but not all of the transferred fat survives, and on its own the method is not suitable for a large increase in size.
Choosing implants for breast augmentation
Implant choice is the most important decision in whether a breast augmentation looks natural. The question “how many cc?” is misleading on its own: the same volume can look far too large on a woman with a narrow chest and too small on a woman with a wide chest.
- Shape: round implants add more fullness to the upper breast; anatomical (teardrop) implants fill the lower pole for a more sloping profile
- Size and profile: determined by measuring the breast base width; the profile describes how far the implant projects forward
- Filling: most breast augmentation procedures today use cohesive silicone gel
- Surface: smooth and textured options exist; for the reasons explained in the risks section, the surface type should be discussed with your surgeon
Some clinics use 3D simulation or trial sizers during a breast augmentation consultation to show how different volumes would look. These tools do not promise an exact result, but they are very useful for making expectations concrete.
Incision site and implant placement
Breast augmentation surgery involves two separate decisions: which incision the implant is inserted through, and which tissue layer it sits in. Both directly affect how visible the scar is and the long-term result.
| Placement | Where | Advantage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Submuscular | Beneath the chest muscle | Implant edges are less visible | Thin skin and little breast tissue |
| Dual plane | Muscle above, breast tissue below | Natural transition, balanced result | Volume loss with mild laxity |
| Subglandular / subfascial | Beneath the breast tissue | Faster recovery, no shape change when the muscle moves | Patients with enough breast tissue |
In breast augmentation, the fold under the breast (inframammary incision) is the most common choice; the scar sits in the bra line and gives the most controlled access to the implant. Incisions around the areola or in the armpit are also options; which suits you depends on areola diameter and implant size.
Is breast augmentation enough if the breasts sag?
No, usually not. If the nipple has dropped to or below the breast fold, an implant alone will not correct the sagging; a heavy implant can even make it worse over time. In that case breast augmentation is combined with a breast lift (mastopexy), either in the same operation or in stages.
- Mild sagging: breast augmentation alone may be enough with the right placement
- Moderate sagging: a limited lift around the areola is added
- Advanced sagging: breast lift and breast augmentation together; the scar is longer
The opposite also happens: some patients want less volume, not more. For that goal, see our breast reduction page.
Breast augmentation surgery step by step
- Initial assessment. A first remote review with your photos, medical history and goals; the methods that may suit you are discussed.
- Face-to-face examination. On arrival in Turkey: measurements, breast ultrasound and blood tests; implant size and placement are finalised. We describe the whole journey on our treatment process page.
- Surgery. Breast augmentation is done under general anaesthesia and takes about 1–2 hours depending on the method. Adding a breast lift takes longer.
- The first night. Usually one night of observation in hospital; discharge the next day.
- Check-ups. Dressing change, support bra fitting and wound check; then clearance to fly.
- Remote follow-up. Regular photographic review after you return home.
Recovery timeline after breast augmentation
Tightness and swelling in the first days after breast augmentation are expected. The implants sit high and firm in the first weeks; as the tissues relax they drop and round out. The timeline below is a general guide.
| Period | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1–3 | Tightness and swelling at their peak | Support bra, avoid straining the arms |
| Week 1 | Discomfort eases noticeably | Back to desk work, short walks |
| Weeks 2–4 | Swelling starts to resolve | No heavy lifting, no sleeping on your front |
| Weeks 4–6 | Daily life largely back to normal | Gradual return to sport with surgeon approval |
| Months 3–6 | Implants settle, final shape becomes clear | Scar care, follow-up examination |
Why choose Turkey for breast augmentation?
Turkey is one of the world's busiest medical tourism destinations for cosmetic surgery, with breast augmentation among the most popular procedures. The reason is not only cost: high-volume plastic surgery teams, hospitals built to international standards and a journey that can be planned end to end.
- Plastic surgery teams experienced in breast augmentation and breast surgery
- Accommodation, transfers and interpreting included in one integrated process
- Istanbul, a short flight from most of Europe
- If suitable, procedures such as a tummy tuck can be planned on the same trip
Neda Deniz holds the Turkish Ministry of Health International Health Tourism Authorisation Certificate (AK-1032) and acts as an intermediary agency. All surgical procedures, including breast augmentation, are performed by our partner specialist surgeons at the relevant hospitals. What to look for when choosing a surgeon is covered in our article on breast augmentation surgeons you can trust.
What determines the cost of breast augmentation
There is no single list price for this procedure; the scope varies from patient to patient. Turkish regulations do not allow price advertising for healthcare services, but knowing what drives the cost makes it easier to compare quotes.
- Method: implants, fat transfer or a combination of both
- Implant brand and type: manufacturer, warranty terms and surface
- Added procedures: adding a breast lift or liposuction
- Hospital, anaesthesia and length of stay
- Accommodation, transfers and follow-up services
Are the implant brand and serial number, your implant card, follow-up visits and revision terms included in the package? The lowest figure usually reflects the narrowest scope.
Breast augmentation risks and long-term follow-up
Like any surgical procedure, breast augmentation carries risks. In Turkey, plastic surgery is practised within the principles of the Turkish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons ; most risks are significantly reduced by careful patient selection and an experienced team.
- Capsular contracture: thickening and hardening of the natural capsule around the implant; the most common long-term problem
- Implant rupture: silicone implants often rupture without symptoms, so periodic ultrasound or MRI is recommended
- Early complications: bleeding, haematoma, infection and temporary change in nipple sensation
- BIA-ALCL: a rare type of lymphoma associated mainly with textured implants
Expectations should be honest too: implants are not lifetime devices. Many patients keep them without problems for 10–20 years, but replacement or revision may be needed over time. Breastfeeding after breast augmentation is possible in most cases; always tell the radiographer you have implants before a mammogram.
Procedures considered in the same plan
Especially after childbirth, breast augmentation is often considered together with changes elsewhere in the body. Combining procedures is only done when total operating time and recovery load allow it; the surgeon makes that call.
- Mommy makeover — breasts, abdomen and waist addressed in one plan
- Tummy tuck and liposuction — body contouring
- BBL — buttock shaping with fat transfer
- Breast reduction — when there is excess volume
Making your decision
Breast augmentation is not a decision made by comparing prices or copying a size from a photo, but by your measurements, your tissue and your long-term expectations. The right question is not “which is the biggest implant?” but “which plan fits my chest and my lifestyle, and who will perform it?”
If you are unsure, getting an assessment first commits you to nothing. Send us your photos and questions; our partner surgeons will review them and we will explain your options openly. If we think breast augmentation is not right for you, we will tell you that just as openly.
Breast augmentation in Turkey: frequently asked questions
How long do breast implants last?
Implants are not guaranteed for life. Many patients keep them without problems for 10–20 years; replacement is decided by issues such as capsule hardening, rupture or a change in shape. That is why regular check-ups matter.
Can I breastfeed after breast augmentation?
In most cases, yes. Especially with an incision in the breast fold, the glands and milk ducts are largely preserved. Always mention any plans for pregnancy at your consultation.
Will breast augmentation scars be visible?
The scar usually sits in the breast fold, along the bra line. It looks pink in the first months, fades over 6–12 months and in most patients is hard to notice unless you look closely.
Is breast augmentation surgery painful?
Breast augmentation is done under general anaesthesia. Afterwards there is tightness and pressure in the first days, especially with submuscular placement; this is managed with standard painkillers.
How many days should I stay in Turkey for breast augmentation?
A 6–7 day breast augmentation programme is usually enough: consultation and tests, surgery, one night in hospital, a check-up and clearance to fly. A breast lift may extend the stay.
Is fat transfer breast augmentation permanent?
Fat cells that take hold are permanent, but part of the transferred fat is absorbed in the first months. The result therefore becomes clear after 3–6 months, and a second session may be needed for the desired volume.
Under or over the muscle: which is better?
There is no single right answer. For patients with thin skin and little breast tissue, submuscular or dual plane placement looks more natural; for those with enough tissue, placement over the muscle can mean a faster recovery.
When can I exercise after breast augmentation?
Light walking starts in the first week. Running, weights and exercises that work the chest muscles usually wait 4–6 weeks, with your surgeon's approval.
What does the cost of breast augmentation depend on?
The method, implant brand, any added procedures, hospital and accommodation determine the cost. An exact figure can only be shared after an examination and a personalised plan.
