Rhinoplasty: a nose that looks like it belongs to your face.
Rhinoplasty is surgery to correct the shape, size or function of the nose; in everyday language it is known as a nose job. In this guide we bring together rhinoplasty techniques, the difference between the open and closed approach, how breathing problems are treated in the same operation, the recovery timeline and how rhinoplasty in Turkey is planned.
- Rhinoplasty is done for both cosmetic and functional reasons; if breathing is restricted, it can be corrected in the same operation (septorhinoplasty).
- Neither the open nor the closed technique is “better”; the choice depends on the structure of the nose and the extent of the change.
- A good result is a nose that is in harmony with the rest of the face and does not look operated on.
- The splint usually comes off in 7–10 days; bruising and marked swelling ease within 2–3 weeks.
- The fine swelling in the tip can take 12 months to resolve completely, longer with thick skin.
- Cosmetic rhinoplasty is not performed before the face has finished growing; the general rule is after the age of 17–18.
What is rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is surgery that reshapes the bony and cartilage framework of the nose. The aim is not simply a “smaller” or “upturned” nose, but a nose that is balanced with the forehead, lips and jawline. On our rhinoplasty treatment page we summarised the scope of the procedure; this guide walks you through the decision step by step.
Rhinoplasty meets two different needs. Cosmetic rhinoplasty changes how the nose looks; functional rhinoplasty corrects structural problems inside the nose to make breathing easier. In practice the two are often combined in the same operation.
- Corrects a hump or bump on the bridge of the nose
- Reshapes a drooping, wide or undefined tip
- Balances the length and width of the nose with the face
- Corrects crookedness and asymmetry after trauma
- Relieves breathing problems caused by a deviated septum
Who is rhinoplasty suitable for?
What matters is that the facial skeleton has finished developing, that general health is good and that expectations are realistic. Cosmetic surgery is usually planned from around 17 for women and 18 for men. With a serious breathing problem or trauma, the surgeon may decide to intervene earlier.
- People who feel the profile, tip or width of their nose does not suit their face
- People whose nose stayed crooked after a fracture or blow
- People who constantly struggle to breathe through their nose
- People who have had rhinoplasty before and are unhappy with the result
Surgery does not copy a nose from a photo; it looks for the best result within your skin thickness, cartilage structure and facial proportions. For people who fixate on very small differences, or who expect the operation to change their whole life, the surgeon first takes the conversation further and, if necessary, does not recommend surgery.
Rhinoplasty techniques: open or closed?
Nose surgery is performed with two main approaches. The difference is the route used to reach the framework of the nose. The quality of the result depends less on the name of the technique than on the surgeon's experience and the accuracy of the plan.
| Technique | Incision | Best for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open rhinoplasty | Inside the nose + a small incision on the columella between the nostrils | Tip work, marked asymmetry, revision | A fine scar on the columella; more tip swelling in the first weeks |
| Closed rhinoplasty | Only from inside the nose | Hump removal, limited tip refinement | The field of view is narrower; may be limiting in complex cases |
| Preservation approach | Open or closed | Preserving the nasal bridge where anatomy allows | Not suitable for every nose |
For the bone stage, some teams use ultrasonic (piezo) devices instead of classic instruments. Piezo rhinoplasty aims to shape bone more precisely and may reduce bruising in some patients; however, it is not necessary in every case and is not a guarantee of a good result on its own.
What can be changed in rhinoplasty?
Every nose operation is individual, but the areas worked on are usually the same. Planning starts by finding which of them disturbs the balance of the face.
- Bridge: a hump or bump is filed down or removed; the nasal bones are then narrowed to rebuild the profile line
- Tip: the cartilages are reshaped with sutures; a drooping tip is lifted, a wide tip refined, an undefined tip sharpened
- Nostrils: narrowed if needed with small incisions at the base of the nostrils
- Nose–lip angle: the angle between nose and lip is adjusted to the facial profile
- Support grafts: weak or missing cartilage is reinforced, usually with cartilage taken from the septum
The nose is not the only part of the facial profile. A receding chin can make the nose look bigger than it is, so in some patients the surgeon also considers chin proportions. If age-related facial changes are the main concern, our facelift guide describes a different route.
Breathing problems: septorhinoplasty
The most common cause of difficulty breathing through the nose is a crooked septum, the wall dividing the nose in two (septal deviation). Enlarged turbinates inside the nose and nostrils that collapse when breathing in can also cause blockage.
When cosmetic rhinoplasty and septum correction are done in the same operation, it is called septorhinoplasty. This has two advantages: the patient avoids two separate operations and two recovery periods, and the surgeon balances both the outer appearance and the inner structure of the nose in one plan. Cartilage from the septum is often used as a graft to support the tip.
Over-reducing or narrowing the nose may give the desired look at first, but can lead to breathing problems in later years. A good rhinoplasty plan protects function as much as appearance; the inside of the nose must always be examined.
Male, ethnic and revision rhinoplasty
Nose surgery does not have the same goal for everyone. The “right” look for a nose depends on gender, facial structure and the person's own identity.
- Male rhinoplasty: usually aims for a straighter, stronger bridge and a tip that is not too upturned. An over-refined nose can look out of place on a male face.
- Ethnic rhinoplasty: features such as thick skin or a wide base are balanced without erasing the person's heritage. With thick skin, swelling lasts longer and tip detail appears later.
- Revision rhinoplasty: performed on a nose that has been operated on before. The tissue is scarred and cartilage is often missing, so if septal cartilage is not enough, ear or rib cartilage may be used. A revision is usually planned at least 12 months after the first operation.
Nose surgery for facial feminisation or masculinisation is planned in a similar way: the nose is considered together with the expression intended for the rest of the face. For patients going through this process, our voice feminisation and voice masculinisation pages may also be helpful.
Rhinoplasty surgery step by step
- Initial assessment. A first remote review with photos taken from the front, side and below, your medical history and your expectations; whether rhinoplasty is right for you is discussed.
- Face-to-face examination. On arrival in Turkey: examination of the inside of the nose, tests and imaging if needed; the plan and technique are finalised. We describe the whole process on our treatment process page.
- Surgery. Usually under general anaesthesia, on average 2–4 hours depending on the scope. Revision or septorhinoplasty may take longer.
- The first night. Most patients stay one night in hospital for observation and are discharged the next day.
- Splint removal. The external splint and any internal silicone splints are usually removed on day 7–10; fitness to fly is then confirmed.
- Remote follow-up. Regular photo check-ups after you return home; months 3, 6 and 12 are especially important.
Recovery timeline after rhinoplasty
Recovery after rhinoplasty moves at two speeds: bruising and gross swelling pass within a few weeks, while the fine swelling in the tip resolves slowly over months. The timeline below is a general framework; skin thickness and the extent of surgery change the timing.
| Period | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1–3 | Swelling and bruising around the eyes at their peak, nose blocked | Rest with the head raised, cold compresses |
| Day 7–10 | Splint comes off; the nose is swollen but its shape is visible | Check-up, fitness-to-fly approval |
| Weeks 2–3 | Bruising largely gone, back to social life | Return to desk work, protect the nose from knocks |
| Weeks 4–6 | Marked swelling subsides | Gradual return to sport with surgeon approval |
| Months 3–6 | Bridge and profile largely settle | Check-up, skin-care advice if needed |
| Month 12 and beyond | The tip approaches its final shape | Final assessment |
What to watch out for after rhinoplasty
In the first weeks the framework of the nose settles into its new position. What you do during this period matters as much as the surgery itself for preserving the result.
- Sleep on your back with your head raised for the first weeks
- Do not blow your nose; sneeze with your mouth open
- Do not rest heavy glasses on your nose; your surgeon will tell you when you can wear them
- Avoid contact sports and activities where the nose could be hit until your surgeon approves
- Smoking and alcohol slow healing; take a break before and after surgery
- Protect it from the sun; skin is more prone to pigmentation while swollen
Why choose rhinoplasty in Turkey?
Turkey is one of the world's most popular health-tourism destinations for rhinoplasty and nose surgery. The reason is not only cost: surgeons who focus on rhinoplasty and handle high case volumes, hospitals meeting international standards and a journey that can be planned end to end.
- Plastic surgery and ENT teams experienced in nose surgery
- Accommodation, transfers and interpreting included in one integrated process
- Istanbul, a short flight from Europe
- If suitable, procedures such as a dental treatment can be planned on the same trip
Neda Deniz holds the Turkish Ministry of Health International Health Tourism Authorisation Certificate (AK-1032) and is an intermediary organisation. All surgical procedures, including rhinoplasty, are performed by our partner specialist surgeons in the relevant hospitals. When choosing a surgeon, look not only at result photos but also at their rhinoplasty experience, how they explain the plan to you and the aftercare.
Factors that determine rhinoplasty cost
It is not right to give a single list price for rhinoplasty; the scope varies from patient to patient. Price advertising for healthcare services is not permitted under Turkish regulations, but knowing what drives the cost makes comparing quotes easier.
- Scope: cosmetic rhinoplasty only, or septorhinoplasty
- First operation or revision: a revision takes longer and may need grafts
- Need for grafts: use of ear or rib cartilage
- Hospital, anaesthesia and length of stay
- Accommodation, transfers and follow-up services
Who will perform the surgery, is internal (septum) correction included, how many check-ups are there, how does remote follow-up work, and what are the conditions if a small correction is needed? The lowest figure often reflects the narrowest scope.
Rhinoplasty risks
Like any surgical procedure, rhinoplasty carries risks. In Turkey, plastic surgery is practised within the principles of the Turkish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons ; most risks are significantly reduced by careful patient selection and an experienced team.
- Early complications: nosebleeds, infection and prolonged swelling
- Breathing problems: blockage after insufficient support or over-narrowing
- Asymmetry and irregularities: small differences that become visible during healing
- Changes in sensation: temporary numbness in the tip of the nose and upper teeth
- Need for revision: some patients may need a small or larger correction
It is also important to be open about expectations: seeing the final nose takes patience. A tip that looks thick or upturned in the first months is usually swelling; no decision on correction is made during this period.
Procedures considered in the same plan
This operation is usually done on its own; however, if the recovery load allows, some procedures can be planned on the same trip. The surgeon decides.
- Dental treatments — before surgery or at a separate time
- Facelift and neck lift — for age-related changes
- Hair transplant — better planned on a separate trip; for details, see our hair transplant guide .
Making your decision
Rhinoplasty is decided not by a nose in a photo or the lowest quote, but by your facial proportions, the inner and outer structure of your nose and your long-term expectations. The right question is not “which is the smallest nose” but “which nose suits my face, how will it protect my breathing and who will do it”.
If you are not sure, getting an assessment first does not commit you to anything. Send us your photos and questions; our partner doctors will review them and we will explain your options clearly. If we think surgery is not right for you, we will tell you that openly too.
Frequently asked questions about rhinoplasty
Is rhinoplasty painful?
The operation is performed under anaesthesia. Afterwards, what patients complain about most is not pain but a blocked nose and a feeling of pressure; this is managed with standard painkillers and eases noticeably within the first few days.
How long does bruising last after rhinoplasty?
Bruising and swelling around the eyes peak in the first 2–3 days and in most patients largely fade within 10–14 days. It usually takes until the second week before it can be covered with make-up.
When will I see the final shape of my nose?
The bridge and overall profile largely settle within 3–6 months. The fine swelling in the tip can take 12 months to resolve, and even longer with thick skin.
Is the scar from open rhinoplasty visible?
In the open technique a small incision is made on the columella, the strip between the nostrils. The scar looks pink for the first months and in most patients becomes hard to notice unless you look closely.
How many days should I stay in Turkey for rhinoplasty?
A programme of 7–10 days is usually recommended: examination and tests, surgery, one night in hospital, splint removal and fitness-to-fly approval are all included.
Will rhinoplasty also fix my breathing problem?
If the problem comes from a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates or collapsing nostrils, it can often be treated in the same operation; this is called septorhinoplasty. Whether this is possible is decided by examining the inside of the nose.
Open or closed rhinoplasty: which is better?
There is no single right answer. The closed technique works well for limited changes; for tip work, marked asymmetry or revision, the open technique gives more control. Your surgeon chooses based on the structure of your nose.
When can I wear glasses after rhinoplasty?
Resting heavy glasses on the bridge of the nose is usually postponed for a few weeks. In the meantime, contact lenses or light solutions that put no weight on the nose are recommended; your surgeon will tell you the exact timing.
Is a second rhinoplasty possible?
Yes, this is called revision rhinoplasty. It is more complex because the tissue is scarred and cartilage is often missing; it is usually planned at least 12 months after the first operation, using ear or rib cartilage if needed.
What does the cost of rhinoplasty depend on?
The scope of surgery, septum correction, whether it is a first operation or a revision, the need for grafts, and the hospital and accommodation package determine the cost. An exact figure can only be shared after examination and personal planning.
