Tummy tuck: a firm, flat stomach that feels like yours.

Procedure Guides 12 min read

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is an operation that removes loose skin and excess fat from the abdomen and repairs slack abdominal muscles to create a flatter, firmer stomach. In this guide we bring together the types of tummy tuck, how it differs from liposuction, its place in a mommy makeover, the recovery timeline and how tummy tuck surgery in Turkey is planned.

In brief
  • A tummy tuck removes loose skin and stitches separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti) back together; liposuction only removes fat and does not tighten skin.
  • There are three main approaches: the full tummy tuck, the mini tummy tuck and the extended tummy tuck; the choice depends on how far the laxity extends.
  • It is the most popular procedure after pregnancy and major weight loss, and it is usually at the heart of a mommy makeover.
  • The incision is planned to sit below the underwear or bikini line; the scar flattens and fades over time.
  • Most people return to desk work after 2–3 weeks and gradually return to exercise after 6–8 weeks.
  • Being close to your ideal weight and having completed your family are key to a lasting tummy tuck result.

What is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck is a body contouring operation that removes excess skin and fat between the belly button and the pubic line and then repairs the abdominal wall from within. Its medical name is abdominoplasty. On our tummy tuck surgery page we summarised what the procedure involves; this guide walks you through the whole decision from start to finish.

What sets a tummy tuck apart from other body procedures is that it treats three layers together: skin, fat and muscle. Unlike fat, which can be lost through diet and exercise, skin that has lost its elasticity and separated abdominal muscles do not recover on their own. A tummy tuck solves exactly these two problems.

  • Removes loose, overhanging skin below the belly button
  • Stitches abdominal muscles separated by pregnancy or weight change back together in the midline
  • Removes a large share of the stretch marks on the lower abdomen along with the skin
  • Places the belly button in a natural position on the new abdominal surface
  • Defines the waistline and improves the body profile

Who is a tummy tuck suitable for?

A tummy tuck is not a weight-loss method. The best results are seen in people whose weight has been stable for several months, who are close to their ideal weight and in good general health. Before surgery, the surgeon examines skin elasticity, muscle separation and fat distribution.

  • Mothers whose abdominal skin has loosened and whose muscles have separated after pregnancy
  • People left with excess skin after major weight loss or bariatric surgery
  • People who cannot get rid of lower-abdominal laxity despite diet and exercise
  • People with sunken or uneven scars from a previous C-section or surgery
If you plan more pregnancies, it is better to wait.

Pregnancy after a tummy tuck is possible, but the repaired muscles may separate again and the skin may stretch once more. If your family is not yet complete, the surgeon will usually recommend postponing the operation. Smoking seriously impairs wound healing, so smokers need to stop at least several weeks before surgery.

Types of tummy tuck: full, mini and extended

Not every tummy tuck has the same scope. Which technique is chosen depends on whether the laxity extends above the belly button, how much the muscles have separated and how much excess skin there is on the sides.

Comparison of tummy tuck types
TypeIncisionBest forBelly button
Full tummy tuckLow horizontal incision from hip to hipLaxity extending above the belly button, marked muscle separationRepositioned
Mini tummy tuckShorter incision, close to a C-section scarLimited excess skin below the belly button onlyUsually stays in place
Extended tummy tuckIncision extending to the sides and the waistLaxity on the sides and waist after major weight lossRepositioned

In addition, combining the two techniques in a single operation (lipoabdominoplasty) is often used to give a sharper contour at the waist and flanks. Whether muscle repair is needed is decided at the examination, with you standing and lying down.

Tummy tuck or liposuction?

This is one of the most common questions. The short answer: if the problem is fat, liposuction; if it is skin and muscle, a tummy tuck. Liposuction removes fat under the skin through thin cannulas; if the skin has good elasticity, it adapts to the new contour. If the skin is already loose, however, removing the fat can make the laxity even more obvious.

  • Liposuction is preferred: if the skin is firm, the muscles are intact and the problem is localised fat
  • A tummy tuck is preferred: if there is overhanging skin, stretch marks and muscle separation below the belly button
  • Both together: if there is both laxity and stubborn fat on the waist and flanks

If fat alone is the issue and you would like to look at liposuction on its own, see our liposuction (fat removal) page. A BBL (Brazilian butt lift) follows the same idea: fat removed from one area is transferred to the buttocks and used as volume there.

Tummy tuck after pregnancy and the mommy makeover

Pregnancy stretches the abdominal wall for months. Even after losing the baby weight, the rectus muscles can stay apart in the midline (diastasis recti) and the skin may not regain its former firmness. That is why a tummy tuck is almost always at the heart of a mommy makeover plan.

A mommy makeover is not the name of a single operation; it is a personalised plan that addresses the changes pregnancy and breastfeeding leave on the body. This combination of abdominal, waist and breast procedures can be planned in one go instead of two separate operations and two separate recoveries.

  • Abdomen: tummy tuck and muscle repair
  • Waist and flanks: contouring with liposuction
  • Chest: if volume has been lost, breast augmentation or a breast lift; if the breasts have become too large, breast reduction
How long should you wait after giving birth?

The general rule is to wait at least 6–12 months after giving birth, until breastfeeding has ended and your weight is stable. By then hormonal changes have settled, the skin and breast tissue are close to their final state and the tummy tuck result is more predictable.

What can a tummy tuck be combined with?

Correcting one area of the body can sometimes make the imbalance with other areas more visible. That is why a tummy tuck is often considered as part of a wider body contouring plan. As long as the total operating time and the recovery load stay within safe limits, the surgeon may suggest some procedures in the same session.

  • Breast augmentation or breast lift: for volume loss and sagging after breastfeeding. You can read about every option in our breast augmentation guide in more depth.
  • Breast reduction: when heavy breasts put strain on the back and neck
  • Liposuction: to complete the contour of the waist, back and inner thighs
  • BBL: for a more balanced silhouette by transferring fat from the abdomen to the buttocks

Age-related changes in the face and neck are usually treated on a separate trip; our facelift guide is a good place to start. In combined surgery, patient safety always sets the limit; splitting procedures into two stages is sometimes wiser than one long session.

The tummy tuck process step by step

  1. Initial assessment. A first remote review based on front and side photos, your height and weight, and your pregnancy and medical history; we discuss whether a tummy tuck suits you and which type is being considered.
  2. Face-to-face examination. On arrival in Turkey, muscle separation and excess skin are examined, blood tests are taken and the incision line is marked together with you. The full journey is described on our treatment process page.
  3. Surgery. Under general anaesthesia, on average 2–4 hours depending on the scope. The operation takes longer when combined with liposuction or a breast procedure.
  4. Hospital observation. Most patients stay in hospital for 1–2 nights and start walking on the first day.
  5. Hotel rest and check-up. If drains were used, they are removed within a few days, and the dressings and compression garment are checked; you are usually cleared to fly on day 7–10.
  6. Remote follow-up. Regular photo check-ins after you return home; months 1, 3 and 6 are especially important.

Tummy tuck recovery timeline

Tummy tuck recovery takes longer than liposuction recovery, especially when the muscles have been repaired. The timeline below is a general guide; the scope of surgery and how quickly you heal will change it.

Stages of recovery after a tummy tuck
PeriodWhat happensWhat to do
Days 1–3Tightness and pain in the abdomen, walking slightly bent forwardShort walks, painkillers, lying with knees slightly bent
Week 1Swelling and bruising; drains removed if usedWearing the compression garment, check-up
Weeks 2–3Walking upright gets easier, energy returnsReturn to desk work
Weeks 6–8Most of the swelling has gone downGradual return to exercise and heavy work with your surgeon's approval
Months 3–6The abdominal contour becomes defined, the scar turns pinkScar care, sun protection
Month 12 and beyondThe scar flattens and fades, the result settlesFinal assessment

What to look out for after a tummy tuck

In the first weeks the abdominal wall and the incision line heal in their new position. What you do in this period directly affects the result and the quality of the scar.

  • Wear your abdominal compression garment consistently for as long as your surgeon recommends
  • In the first weeks, sleep with your knees slightly bent and your upper body raised
  • Avoid heavy lifting and movements that strain the abdomen for at least 6 weeks
  • Walk early and often; it lowers the risk of blood clots
  • Stay away from cigarettes and nicotine products; they seriously impair wound healing
  • Keep your weight stable; large weight swings can spoil the result

Why choose a tummy tuck in Turkey?

Turkey is one of the countries that welcomes the most patients from Europe for tummy tuck and body contouring procedures. The reason is not cost alone: plastic surgeons with a high volume of body surgery, hospitals that meet international standards and a journey that can be planned from start to finish.

  • Plastic surgery teams experienced in tummy tuck and mommy makeover surgery
  • Accommodation, transfers and interpreting included in one integrated process
  • Close follow-up in the first week of recovery and the option to rest at the hotel
  • If suitable, procedures such as a dental treatment can be planned on the same trip

Neda Deniz holds the Turkish Ministry of Health International Health Tourism Authorisation Certificate (AK-1032) and is an intermediary agency. All surgical procedures, including tummy tuck surgery, are performed by our partner specialist surgeons in the relevant hospitals. When choosing a surgeon, look not only at result photos but also at their body contouring experience, how they explain the plan to you and the aftercare they provide.

What determines the cost of a tummy tuck in Turkey

It would not be right to give a single list price for a tummy tuck; the scope varies from patient to patient. Turkish regulations do not allow price advertising for healthcare services, but knowing what drives the cost makes comparing quotes much easier.

  • Type: mini, full or extended tummy tuck
  • Muscle repair: whether diastasis recti needs to be repaired
  • Added procedures: combining with liposuction, breast augmentation, breast reduction or a BBL
  • Hospital, anaesthesia and length of stay
  • Accommodation, transfers, compression garment and follow-up services
Questions to ask when comparing quotes.

Who will perform the surgery, are muscle repair and liposuction included in the package, how many nights in hospital, are the compression garment and check-ups covered, and how does remote follow-up work? The lowest figure usually reflects the narrowest scope.

Tummy tuck risks

Like any major surgery, a tummy tuck carries risks. In Turkey, plastic surgery is practised in line with the principles of the Turkish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons and most risks are reduced significantly by careful patient selection, stopping smoking and an experienced team.

  • Fluid build-up (seroma): fluid collecting under the incision; drained with a needle if necessary
  • Wound healing problems: delayed healing along the incision, especially in smokers
  • Scarring: thick or prominent scars; usually soften with care and time
  • Changes in sensation: numbness in the lower abdomen lasting several months
  • Blood clots (thrombosis): the risk is reduced by walking early and the precautions your surgeon recommends
  • Asymmetry and dog ears: small bulges at the ends of the incision; a minor correction is rarely needed

It is also important to be honest about expectations: a tummy tuck leaves a permanent scar. With a well-planned operation the scar stays hidden under clothing, but it never disappears completely.

Making your decision

A tummy tuck is not chosen on the lowest quote or a stomach in a photo; it is decided on your skin elasticity, the degree of muscle separation, your pregnancy plans and your long-term expectations. The right question is not "which is the flattest stomach" but "is my problem fat, skin or muscle, and who will solve it, and how".

If you are not sure, getting an assessment first does not commit you to anything. Send us your photos and questions; our partner surgeons will review them and we will explain your tummy tuck, liposuction or mommy makeover options clearly. If we think surgery is not right for you, we will tell you that too.

Tummy tuck: frequently asked questions

Is tummy tuck surgery painful?

The operation is performed under general anaesthesia. Afterwards, especially if the muscles were repaired, tightness and pain are felt in the first days; this is managed with painkillers and eases noticeably within the first week.

Will the tummy tuck scar be visible?

A tummy tuck leaves a permanent scar, but the incision is planned to sit below the underwear or bikini line. The scar is pink and noticeable in the first months; in most patients it flattens and fades within 12 months.

When can I go back to work after a tummy tuck?

Most people return to desk work after 2–3 weeks. For physically demanding work and exercise, your surgeon will usually ask you to wait 6–8 weeks.

How many days should I stay in Turkey for a tummy tuck?

A programme of 7–10 days is usually recommended: the consultation and blood tests, the surgery, 1–2 nights in hospital, rest at the hotel and the check-up before you are cleared to fly all fit into this period.

Should I have a tummy tuck or liposuction?

If the problem is only localised fat and your skin is firm, liposuction may be enough. If there is loose skin below the belly button, stretch marks and muscle separation, you need a tummy tuck. In many patients the two are planned together.

Can I get pregnant after a tummy tuck?

Yes, pregnancy is possible; however, the repaired muscles can separate again and the skin can stretch once more. That is why it is best to have completed your family first.

Does a tummy tuck fix a C-section scar?

In most cases the C-section scar lies within the area removed during a tummy tuck and is taken away with the excess skin. A sunken or uneven C-section scar is thus replaced by a new, neater scar.

Will a tummy tuck help me lose weight?

No, a tummy tuck is not a weight-loss procedure. The skin and fat removed may make a small difference on the scales, but the goal is the shape and firmness of the abdomen, not weight.

Is a mommy makeover the same as a tummy tuck?

No. A tummy tuck is a single operation; a mommy makeover is a personalised plan that combines a tummy tuck, liposuction and breast augmentation, a breast lift or a breast reduction according to the changes left by pregnancy.

What affects the cost of a tummy tuck in Turkey?

The type of tummy tuck, muscle repair, added procedures such as liposuction, the hospital and length of stay and the accommodation package determine the cost. An exact figure can only be shared after an examination and a personalised plan.
